Chomp Supply: What's your favourite food? Why?
Sloane & Blake: I am known for loving McDonald's! It's definitely one of my favourites but I also love sushi, Vietnamese, Thai and Indian... basically I love all food.
CS: What's your favourite vacation spot? Why?
SB: That's a hard question because I've done quite a bit of traveling. Currently, Hawaii, Tofino and Canmore are my favourite spots. Hawaii is so family friendly and the geology there is breathtaking!
CS: Tell us a bit about yourself and your family.
SB: I'm from Calgary and my husband is from Canmore and we moved to Vancouver in 2015. We have two girls, Blake (3.5) and Sloane (2) and our dog, Loki (4). We love traveling and being outside.
CS: Describe your creative style.
SB: Matchy matchy or simple. My favourite beads to use are marble beads--- you will notice most of our teether clips have marble in them. I also feel the need to match the beads on the pacifier clip with the colours on the teether.
CS: How did you get into crafting?
SB: I've always loved crafting and creating things with my hands. When Blake was teething, I wanted to make her a few teether clips but didn't know where to start. Knowing myself, if I bought a bunch of supplies, I would get addicted to creating new patterns with all the fun beads and I would continue to make more and more and obviously need to open an online shop. With the number of shops on the market, I was a bit intimidated to start something so I didn't. Fast forward to our second child. Sloane was teething and I flirted with the idea again to start something. I really wanted to keep my hands busy (as if kids aren't busy enough) so I just went for it and the rest is history.
CS: What was the first thing you ever made?
SB: In the beading world: a pacifier clip.
CS: What project/product are you most proud of?
SB: Our two exclusive designs: the Hockey Net and ALLSTAR Hockey Jersey silicone teethers. I played ice hockey for over 15+ years so I was looking for a hockey teether for the kids. Both times I searched for one and never found one. I knew someone had to get hockey teethers into little hands and mouths so I decided to do it and here we are two hockey designs later.
CS: What does your current work space look like?
SB: Small, the space is small. I work at my kitchen table after the kids go to sleep.
CS: What does your dream work space look like?
SB: Any space large enough to store all my products where I can work, without needing to haul it to the kitchen table and back into the bedroom would be a win.
CS: How do you balance work and home life?
SB: I take care of my family and things around the home during the day and the second our kids are in bed, I work away until 2:00am. The kids don't nap so I don't get much done during the daytime.
CS: Where do you see your business going in the next five years?
SB: Hopefully we can design more exclusive teethers and offer more styles but we'll see!
CS: What advice would you give to someone looking to start their own small business?
SB: Just go for it! Do your research and don't expect to be successful right away. If it's hard, then you're doing it right. Stay positive and make sure you are doing it because you love it.
CS: What do you love most about Chomp?
SB: The Chomp Community! I wish the Facebook Chomp Community group was around when I first started because there is so much great information for new makers. I love how this group is about #communityovercompetition
CS: What would you like to see Chomp carry in the future?
SB: I would love to see jersey t-shirt yarn!
