Chew-eez By Sherees: My favorite food/meal is Ackee and Saltfish. Its not a dish I grew up eating. My mom is Canadian and doesn't eat ANY fish what so ever. The dish is Jamaican and while my dad is Jamaican, I never grew up with him, so I wasn't exposed to it. Growing up, I enjoyed cooking, so I challenged myself to cook authentic foods that I wasn't accustom to. This dish I learned and fell in love with instantly.
CS: What's your favourite vacation spot? Why?
CBS: I am sad to say that I have only traveled on a vacation once to the Dominican Republic. It was an amazing trip, but I feel my heart and soul being drawn to Aruba. I’m not sure why, to be honest. It just sounds like a peaceful place to live and to vacation. It seems simple… where people live and enjoy the simple things. I haven’t heard of any conflict in Aruba… it’s a very small island, which, I would assume it would make everyone almost feel like family.
CS: Tell us a bit about yourself and your family.
CBS: I am a mother of 3 (Nalani - my oldest, Dallas - my middle, and Shiloh - my youngest) and a life partner to 1, Dwayne. I started my own business a little over a year ago as a way to have something for myself… something that I was able to grow and control; as well express my creativity. I am a middle child with an older sister, Rhonda and a younger brother, LeVar. I was born in Toronto, Ontario but lived in Collingwood, Ontario (my mothers hometown) for a number of years, and was raised mainly in Mississauga, Ontario. I’m very much just an outspoken extrovert who tries to live life to the fullest and enjoy it with people who bring me happiness, joy, and laughter. I say crazy things (usually funny things, I should add!) and just try to enjoy life and everything life has to offer.
CS: Describe your creative style.
CBS: Full of color!! Fun to look at... eye catching! I create whatever is in my heart and mind to create. The possibilities are endless for me.
CS: How did you get into crafting?
CBS: I’ve always loved arts and crafts as a kid. Drawing, coloring, painting, pottery making, fimo clay molding, bracelet making with embroidery thread and Gimp ..you name it! But as adulthood has completely taken over my life, arts and crafts kind of fell onto the back burner. I’m am happy now that I am able to have a business that ties into my joy of arts and crafts into my life again.
CS: What was the first thing you ever made?
CBS: Oh gosh! Probably a really ugly, hand painted earrings for my mom with a matching necklace, I made when I was maybe 6 years old. (how much you want to bet, she still has them! LOL). I use to always wonder why she never wore them... now I know! 😊
CS: What project/product are you most proud of?
CBS: I’m proud of my booth that I’m designing (its not fully completed yet). It’s big (big for me!) and I’m proud of actually committing to it and working on it until its done.
CS: What does your current work space look like?
CBS: A jungle!! OMG…I moved my “Office” to the basement so I would have more space and be more organized… NOPE! it’s a mess with bins and cords and my sewing machine all over the table.
CS: What does your dream work space look like?
CBS: Savanna's basement shop LOL
CS: How do you balance work and home life?
CBS: It’s the hardest thing! I’m not sure I’m doing a good job, to be honest. I try my best to limit my time on my phone… posting and editing pictures… but its really hard. And being a one woman show, I’m responsible for EVERYTHING. If something needs to get done, I’m doing it! I’m hoping with time and experience, it will get easier. But truthfully, I look to other women for ideas and inspirations on how to better my work/life balance (wine helps!!).
CS: Where do you see your business going in the next five years?
CBS: I'm hoping to be a self sufficient e-commerce business with some options in select stores (kind of like my imaginary IG BFF @prettypleaseteethers boutique!)
CS: What advice would you give to someone looking to start their own small business?
CBS: Don't give up, its ok to cry, hard work, and a good work ethic will pay off!
CS: What do you love most about Chomp?
CBS: Savanna... DUH! Also, their commitment to women like me.
CS: What would you like to see Chomp carry in the future?
CBS: I couldn't even imagine Chomp doing any more than they already do!! its incredible. but I'd really love an invite to her next pool party...just saying LOL
