Abel's Workshop: I'm addicted to enchiladas, or really any Mexican food for that matter!
CS: What's your favourite vacation spot? Why?
AW: Out of the places we've been so far, Cancun, Mexico was my favorite! Nothing better than sun, sand and good mojitos.
CS: Tell us a bit about yourself and your family.
AW: My husband and I are high school sweethearts. We've been together for over eight years and married for three years. My husband is an electrical engineer, and prior to owning Abel's Workshop I worked as a veterinary technician. Our son, Abel, turned one year old at the beginning of July. He is my inspiration for products, and the reason I opened Abel's Workshop!
CS: Describe your creative style.
AW: I strive to make items that are modern and unique. I use natural hardwoods in a majority of my items because I love the look of natural wood grain!
CS: How did you get into crafting?
AW: I started by making toys and teethers for my son, Abel. Soon, I was making them for friends as well, and when I saw how much babies were enjoying my items I knew it was something I wanted to share with the world!
CS: What was the first thing you ever made?
AW: Personalized pacifier clips
CS: What project/product are you most proud of?
AW: Our custom wooden teethers are always very rewarding to make. I design, draw, hand cut, hand sand and hand finish every one of them myself.
CS: What does your current work space look like?
AW: Currently, I have two work spaces - a wood shop set up in our garage, and an office/crafting space in a spare bedroom of our home.
CS: What does your dream work space look like?
AW: Eventually, if my business continues to grow, I'd love to have a larger work space of some kind. It would be amazing to have more product display, more room for making things and a desktop computer set up away from my home. Working out of my house makes it hard to separate home life and work life!
CS: How do you balance work and home life?
AW: This is a challenge for me, to be honest. I try really hard to only work during my son's naps and on Saturdays. This way I can be present with my son during the day, and Sunday is reserved as a family day. I often find myself working when I shouldn't be though - it's hard not to!
CS: Where do you see your business going in the next five years?
AW: Hopefully, my business will continue to grow. I'd love to be able to launch more products, participate in local markets and see some of my items stocked in brick and mortar stores as well!
CS: What advice would you give to someone looking to start their own small business?
AW: Take your time. I made the mistake of rushing to get my shop open, and I regretted it! Allow yourself to build your website, create products, etc. Slowly over time instead of wearing yourself thin.
CS: What do you love most about Chomp?
AW: I love so many things about Chomp! The products are great quality, and I appreciate that they are safety tested. Not only that, but the customer service is great, and the shop owner, Savanna, so clearly loves what she does! I love seeing her social media posts - they always brighten my day!
CS: What would you like to see Chomp carry in the future?
AW: Paracord, a wider variety of wood ring sizes.
